Secure Your Home Office | Cyber Tip Tuesday

Your home office is still part of your business security
Working from home doesn’t mean cyber threats stay at the office.
Your home Wi-Fi, laptop, passwords, applications and browsing habits can all become part of your organisation’s security environment.
Cybercriminals don’t care whether you’re working from a corporate office, a dining-room table or your couch.
That means even a small home office deserves proper protection.
This week’s Cyber Tip
Give your home office a quick cybersecurity check.
Secure your Wi-Fi
Use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password and make sure the router’s default administrator password has been changed.
If your router still uses the credentials it arrived with, changing them should be one of your first steps.
Protect your devices
Keep your operating system, applications, web browsers and security software up to date.
Security updates often fix vulnerabilities that attackers may already know about.
Protect your passwords
Avoid reusing the same password across multiple accounts.
Use unique passwords and, where possible, a password manager to generate and securely store them.
Turn on MFA
Enable multi-factor authentication wherever it is available, especially for:
- email;
- Microsoft 365;
- banking;
- cloud applications; and
- business accounts.
A password alone should not be the only thing standing between an attacker and your account.
Think before you browse
Malicious and phishing websites can look incredibly convincing.
Check links before clicking, especially when they arrive through unexpected emails, SMS messages or WhatsApp.
Lock your screen
Even when working from home, get into the habit of locking your device whenever you step away.
It is a simple habit that becomes even more important when the same environment is shared with other people.
Keep work and personal activity separate
Where possible, avoid allowing family members to use the same device you use to access sensitive business information.
Separating personal and business activity helps reduce unnecessary exposure.
Your home office may be small. Your protection shouldn’t be.
Remote workers and small businesses often use the same technology and cloud services as much larger organisations.
That means they face many of the same cyber risks.
